Banzai Residence

The core ideas we explored with the Banzai Residence were to develop an Australian, contemporary sub-tropical home that presented an alternative to the local aesthetic, avoided direct references to ‘The Queenslander’ or ‘50s beach houses’ but one that encapsulated everything that was good about these iconic predecessors.

The clients loved the ‘lightness’ of the climate responsive Queenslander and equally the materiality of the low maintenance, no-fuss 50s beach house, yet they wanted none of these exactly. The home was thus conceived as a rustic container stretching along the North-South axis, projecting into the street and floating above two ground floor, north-facing pavilions that anchor the home and create an internal private courtyard.
